Hispanic Heritage Month

Article Date
September 16, 2019

National Hispanic Heritage month begins September 15 and lasts until October 15!

Hispanic Heritage Month initially began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and was eventually expanded by Ronald Reagan to last an entire month in 1988.

Why September 15? September 15 is a notable day for Hispanic Heritage because it celebrates the anniversary of independence for several countries - including El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. September 16 also marks the independence of Mexico - so there's quite a lot to celebrate in September! Learn more about the history of Hispanic Heritage Month here.

Join BiblioTech Public Library in honoring Hispanic Heritage Month by attending one of our programs in September - including Crafternoon for Kids on Wednesday, September 18 at BiblioTech East and Thursday, September 26 at BiblioTech South. Kids and teens are welcome to drop-in to make a mini-pinata between 4pm and 6pm.

Adults 21+ are welcome to join us at Big Hops on Huebner for our Libros and Libations Book Club on Wednesday, September 25. We will be reading With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo - a vibrant tale of a teen mom who dreams of becoming a chef.

Check out Hoopla for tons of great reads about Hispanic Heritage - Hoopla materials are available immediately (no holds!) for BiblioTech library card holders. Don't forget to take a look at our Hispanic Heritage Month bookshelf on cloudLibrary as well.

Another fantastic way to celebrate a culture is to learn its language! Mango Languages offers lessons in over 72 languages - including Spanish. Mango is available for free for BiblioTech patrons.
